One ancient practice that has stood the test of time is the spiritual bath or ritual purififcation. Something that can banish curses, remove hexes, bring in love and prosperity, and even renew a war-torn spirit; more than just a physical cleansing, a spiritual bath is a spiritual cleanse that nourishes the soul, clears negative energy, and promotes spiritual alignment.
In this guide, we’ll explore the history, benefits, and how to make a spiritual bath for beginners, along with a sample recipe to get you started on your journey to developing a spiritual cleanse regimen.
The History of Spiritual Baths:
The practice of spiritual bathing dates back centuries and is found in cultures around the world. Ancient civilizations all recognized the power of water as a conduit for spiritual purification, spirit-trapping, and spiritual healing. In many traditions, water of various varieties are seen as a sacred element that connects us to the divine and serves as a channel for spiritual energy; it is also tied to the nurturing aspect of the Divine mother and her life-giving waters that restore us to the purity we had when we were born.
In African diasporic religions, traditions and folk magic systems such as Palo Mayombe, Hoodoo, Regla de Ocha, and more, spiritual baths are an integral part of spiritual hygiene and ritual practice. They are used for various purposes, including cleansing the aura, removing negative influences, attracting love or prosperity, dream invocation, breaking curses, and connecting with ancestral spirits. These traditions emphasize the importance of intention, prayer, and ritual when preparing and using spiritual baths.
The Benefits of Spiritual Baths:
The benefits of spiritual baths are numerous and encompass physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of well-being. Physically, they help to promote relaxation and soothe tired muscles. Emotionally, they can provide a sense of peace, clarity, and emotional release, helping to alleviate signs of spiritual attacks or evil eye. Spiritually, they serve as a powerful tool for cleansing and purifying the aura, balancing energy centers, and deepening spiritual connection. It is a good rule of thumb to have a spiritual bath at least once a month to carry your blessing through to the next month!
How to Prepare a Spiritual Bath:
Preparing a spiritual bath is a sacred and intentional process that requires mindfulness and reverence. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started on your first spiritual cleanse:
- Setting the intention: Before preparing the physical bath, take a moment to assess what brought you to this moment. What do you hope to achieve or manifest? Whether it’s releasing negative energy that you are feeling and have confirmed via divination, attracting abundance, or connecting with your higher self, clearly define your intention and hold it in your mind as you prepare your bath.
- Get Your Supplies: You’ll need a few simple ingredients to prepare your spiritual bath. This may include herbs, flowers, spiritual colognes, or other natural materials prescribed in your preferred method of divination, or a common recipe. If you are collecting your ingredients from nature, take a few pennies, and some trail mix (without chocolate) and give an offering to the spirit of the woods before you pick the plants, always say your thank you, and remember to never use a blade to cut the plant. ***If you are planning multiple days of bath, get enough herb to make enough for 3,5,7 or 9 days of spiritual baths.
- Preparation: Get a basin and fill it with cool clean water, depending on your purpose you can use specific types of water for more targeted results, and add your organic materials. Macerate the plant material with your hands while reciting your prayers of choice and keep on kneading those plants until your water takes on a nice deep green color. If you are using dry ingredients, put it in a pot and set it to a boil. After you have achieved your desired color, take the liquid, and strain (for those who don’t want herbs in their bathtubs, drains, or showers), and add a bit of holy water, spiritual cologne, such as Florida water, and some incense ash. Set aside.
- Spiritually cleanse your bathroom. Take a shower to clean cleaned up first (if you are doing the tub version of this bath).
- Fill your bathtub with warm water to a comfortable temperature. As the water is filling, add a cup or two of your prepared bath to the water. If you are using a shower, take some of the spiritual bath, add it to a basin, and fill it with warm water. There is truly nothing worse than dumping a bucket of cold murky water on your head while naked — believe me.
- Say your prayers: Before stepping into the bath, you may say a prayer, recite an affirmation, or simply call upon your spiritual guides and ancestors to bless and protect the bath as you reflect on what you’re trying to achieve.
- Enter the Bath: Once the bath is prepared, carefully step into the water. If in a shower, take a shower as normal and once you are ready, you will say aloud what you are either releasing or bringing in as you allow the spiritual bath to run over your head and body. For tub users, sit and run the water over yourself, praying and incanting your purpose. For shower users, pour it over your head and body while praying and incanting.
- Settle into meditation: During this process, it is not uncommon for one to experience a spiritual download or an epiphany related to your desired outcome.
- Stay according to your comfort level: There’s no set time limit for a spiritual bath; however in my opinion, for a bath to remove negative influences, it is better to get in, do your thing, rinse that mess off, and get out. As for baths that are meant to bring sweetness or good fortune, linger all you like; heck, visualize and talk to the spirit of the water if you please.
- Making your exit: When you’re ready to exit the bath, do so mindfully, taking care to ground yourself and dress in light or white clothing. It is better to do this before bed, so that you may unwind spiritually after this self-care service. Refrain from watching anything negative, having dubious interactions with people, or getting wrapped up in the hassles of life. This is a “mind turned off” sort of thing. Go relax! 🙂
